Every expert was once a beginner who found the right guide. GeoGuru.Africa connects talented African developers with the mentorship and opportunities they need to become leaders in open-source geospatial technology. We remove barriers - whether technical complexity, geographic distance, or financial constraints - through hands-on guidance and conference funding that opens doors to the global FOSS4G community.

The name “GeoGuru” embodies our mission: a Guru is one who removes darkness (barriers to knowledge and opportunity) and brings light (technical expertise and community connection). We illuminate the path for African developers to contribute meaningfully to the global geospatial ecosystem.

Our Dual Approach

Expert Mentorship: Learning GeoServer doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We guide developers through the Docker-based development environment with clear direction and practical support. Starting with documentation and beginner-friendly issues, contributors build real skills and confidence using the Japanese Kaizen philosophy of incremental growth. Each contribution strengthens both the project and the developer’s expertise.

Conference Access: FOSS4G conferences transform careers through technical sessions, hallway conversations, and community connections. But the real magic happens in the workshops and code sprints - hands-on working sessions where developers learn through participation, contribute to real projects, and build confidence through in-person collaboration with the project maintainers. Yet financial and geographic barriers often prevent talented African developers from attending these pivotal events. We raise funds transparently to send developers to these conferences, ensuring that talent - not location or economics - determines who gets to participate, learn, and lead.
